1893 - Gaelic League Founded
The Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) was established by Douglas Hyde and Eoin MacNeill in Dublin. This cultural organization would become instrumental in the revival of the Irish language and culture, influencing the nationalist movement and shaping modern Irish identity. Many future leaders of the independence movement would first become politically active through the League.
1922 - Harry Boland Dies in Dublin
Republican leader Harry Boland died from wounds received during his arrest by Free State forces. A close friend of Michael Collins and former IRB member, Boland's death exemplified the tragic nature of the Civil War, where former comrades found themselves on opposite sides. His loss was deeply felt within the republican movement.
1975 - Miami Showband Massacre
Three members of the popular Irish showband were killed in a UVF ambush near Newry. The band was returning from a performance when their minibus was stopped at a fake checkpoint. This tragic event shocked both communities in Northern Ireland and highlighted the targeting of civilians during the Troubles.
1981 - Kieran Doherty Dies on Hunger Strike
IRA member and elected TD Kieran Doherty died after 73 days on hunger strike in the Maze Prison, becoming the ninth hunger striker to die. Having been elected to the Dáil while on hunger strike, his death particularly resonated with the Irish public and further internationalized the prison protest.
1994 - The Shop Street Excavation Begins
Archaeologists commenced a major excavation in Galway's Shop Street, uncovering significant medieval artifacts and structures. The dig revealed important information about medieval urban life in Galway and provided valuable insights into the city's development as a major trading port during the Middle Ages.
