1874 - Home Rule Movement
The Home Rule League held its first national convention in Dublin, marking the emergence of a new phase in constitutional nationalism. Under Isaac Butt's leadership, the movement sought to unite different strands of Irish opinion behind the demand for self-government. The gathering established organizational structures and electoral strategies that would influence Irish parliamentary nationalism for decades.
1920 - Dáil Courts
The Dáil government formally established its own court system, creating an alternative to British judicial institutions. These republican courts, operating throughout much of the country, demonstrated the growing authority of the independence movement and its ability to provide basic governmental services. The success of these courts in administering justice helped legitimize the independence movement.
1974 - UWC Strike Impact
The Ulster Workers Council strike entered its second week, effectively paralyzing Northern Ireland's economy. The strike's success in disrupting normal life demonstrated the power of loyalist industrial action and the limitations of British authority. The growing crisis would ultimately lead to the collapse of the power-sharing executive.
