1875 - Home Rule Conference

Isaac Butt convened a major Home Rule conference in Dublin that brought together various strands of constitutional nationalism. The meeting established new strategies for parliamentary action and demonstrated the growing strength of the Home Rule movement, though it also revealed tensions between Butt's moderate approach and the more aggressive tactics advocated by younger members like Charles Stewart Parnell. The conference's decisions would influence Irish parliamentary nationalism for decades to come.

1920 - Hunger Strike Begins

Republican prisoners in Mountjoy Prison began a hunger strike demanding political status, marking a significant escalation in the prison struggle during the War of Independence. The strike quickly gained public support and put pressure on the British authorities, who faced growing international attention to their treatment of Irish political prisoners.

1958 - Economic Development

The government published the influential "Programme for Economic Expansion," written by T.K. Whitaker, which marked a revolutionary shift in Irish economic policy. This document laid out a comprehensive plan for abandoning protectionism in favor of free trade and foreign investment, setting Ireland on a path toward economic modernization that would transform the country in the coming decades.
