1915 - O'Donovan Rossa Funeral

Patrick Pearse delivered his famous graveside oration at the funeral of Fenian leader Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa. The funeral became a massive demonstration of republican strength, with Pearse's speech serving as a call to arms for the coming revolution. His words "Ireland unfree shall never be at peace" would become a rallying cry for the independence movement.

1846 - Famine Relief Works

The government launched an expanded public works program in response to the growing potato famine. These relief works, while providing some employment, proved inadequate to address the scale of the crisis. The program's strict rules and low wages left many unable to access the help they desperately needed.

1922 - Free State Offensive

National Army forces launched a major offensive against republican positions in Cork and Kerry. The operation marked a significant escalation in the Civil War, with Free State troops using artillery and seaborne landings to dislodge anti-Treaty forces from their strongholds.

1981 - Kieran Doherty Dies

IRA hunger striker Kieran Doherty died in the Maze Prison after 73 days without food. His death, coming shortly after Kevin Lynch's, intensified the prison protest and further galvanized republican support. Doherty had been elected to the Dáil during his hunger strike, highlighting the political impact of the prison protest.
