August 19th in Irish History
1845 - Potato Blight
The first official report of potato blight in Ireland was published, though its significance was not yet understood. The report noted disease in potato crops across several counties, particularly in the east. This early warning of what would become the Great Famine showed the vulnerability of Ireland's dependence on the potato crop.
1876 - Parnell Speech
Charles Stewart Parnell delivered a significant speech in Parliament challenging British policy in Ireland. His aggressive parliamentary tactics marked a new phase in Irish nationalist politics. The speech demonstrated the emerging style of "obstructionism" that would characterize his leadership.
1922 - Civil War Operations
Free State forces launched major operations against republican positions in County Kerry. The offensive marked an escalation in the Civil War in the southwest. Heavy fighting occurred around Kenmare and Killarney as National Army troops advanced.
1969 - Belfast Refugees
The refugee crisis in Belfast intensified as more families fled their homes due to intimidation and violence. Community centers and schools struggled to cope with the numbers seeking shelter. The displacement would lead to long-term changes in the city's residential patterns.
1989 - Peace Initiative
The Irish government launched new initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue between nationalist and unionist communities. The effort reflected growing recognition of the need for new approaches to resolving the Northern Ireland conflict. These discussions would contribute to the developing peace process.
