1819 - Catholic Meeting

A major Catholic Association meeting in Dublin debated new strategies for achieving emancipation. The gathering marked an important step in developing more organized approaches to Catholic political activism. These discussions would influence O'Connell's later mass mobilization techniques.

1879 - Land League Growth

Charles Stewart Parnell addressed a massive Land League meeting in Westport, County Mayo. His speech linked the land question with the broader struggle for Irish self-government, effectively combining agrarian and nationalist politics. The gathering demonstrated the growing strength of the tenant farmer movement.

1922 - Collins in Cork

Michael Collins arrived in Cork city as part of his controversial inspection tour of Munster. His presence in his home county, despite warnings about his safety, showed his determination to personally oversee military operations. The visit would prove to be his last to the region.

1969 - Belfast Violence

Major rioting erupted in Belfast as British troops attempted to maintain peace lines between communities. The violence marked some of the worst sectarian clashes since the deployment of troops. Several homes were burned as people fled across the religious divide.

1981 - Hunger Strike Ends

The republican prisoners in the Maze Prison announced the end of the hunger strike after 217 days. The protest had claimed ten lives and attracted worldwide attention to the prison conflict. The decision to end the strike reflected growing pressure from prisoners' families and the republican leadership.
