April 5th in Irish History

1803 - Emmet's Rising Plans

Robert Emmet intensified preparations for his planned rebellion, establishing weapons depots across Dublin. His organization focused on building a network of supporters while gathering arms and ammunition. These preparations would lead to the unsuccessful rising later that year.

The planning demonstrated both the ambition and limitations of Irish revolutionary organization in the aftermath of the 1798 rebellion. Emmet's efforts to create a more disciplined and secretive movement would influence future generations of Irish republicans.

1920 - Income Tax Resistance

The Dáil launched a campaign of income tax resistance, urging citizens to withhold payments from British authorities. This initiative marked a significant expansion of civil disobedience during the War of Independence. The campaign demonstrated the growing confidence of the independence movement in challenging British administration.

1955 - Costello's Commonwealth Exit

Taoiseach John A. Costello formally announced Ireland's intention to leave the British Commonwealth. This declaration marked the final step in Ireland's journey to complete independence from Britain. The decision reflected the evolution of Irish nationalism and international relations in the post-war period.
