April 25th in Irish History
1916 - Rising Intensifies
The Easter Rising entered its second day as British forces began deploying artillery against rebel positions in Dublin. The fighting intensified around key locations such as the Four Courts and South Dublin Union, while civilian casualties mounted in the crossfire. The British military response, initially disorganized, began to take on a more coordinated approach as reinforcements arrived from the Curragh and Britain.
1938 - Anglo-Irish Agreements
The Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement was signed in London, marking a significant improvement in relations between Ireland and Britain. The agreement resolved long-standing economic disputes, returned the Treaty Ports to Irish control, and ended the Economic War that had damaged both economies. This diplomatic breakthrough, negotiated by de Valera's government, strengthened Ireland's sovereignty while establishing a new framework for Anglo-Irish relations on the eve of World War II.
1976 - Peace Movement
The Peace People organized their largest demonstration to date in Belfast, drawing participants from both communities. The movement's call for an end to violence resonated with many who had grown weary of the Troubles, though its effectiveness would be limited by deep-rooted political divisions.
