1870 - Land Bill Introduction
Gladstone introduced his first Irish Land Bill to the House of Commons, marking a significant attempt to address the grievances of Irish tenant farmers. The legislation aimed to give legal recognition to Ulster tenant right customs and provide compensation for improvements made by tenants. This reform, though limited, represented the first major British legislative intervention in Irish land relations and established principles that would influence future land reform.
1921 - Custom House Plans
The IRA's Dublin Brigade completed detailed preparations for the attack on the Custom House, one of the most ambitious operations of the War of Independence. The planning involved extensive reconnaissance and coordination between multiple IRA units, though the operation would ultimately prove costly in terms of casualties and arrests.
1957 - Border Campaign
The IRA announced a temporary ceasefire in its Border Campaign, responding to declining public support and increased security cooperation between British and Irish authorities. The pause in operations revealed growing doubts within the republican movement about the effectiveness of armed struggle.
