1847 - Famine Relief Measures
The British government announced new relief measures for Irish Famine victims. The initiatives included public works projects and soup kitchens. These efforts, though significant, would prove inadequate to address the scale of the disaster.
1920 - First Republican Courts
The first Dáil Courts were established in West Clare, creating an alternative legal system. These courts operated in parallel to British institutions during the War of Independence. Their success demonstrated the growing authority of the independence movement.
1974 - UDA Banned
The British government officially proscribed the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). This loyalist paramilitary organization had been involved in numerous sectarian attacks. The ban marked a shift in British policy toward loyalist paramilitaries.
