1873 - Home Rule League Founded
The Home Rule League was established in Dublin by Isaac Butt, marking the beginning of the organized Home Rule movement. This new political organization sought to achieve self-government for Ireland within the British Empire through parliamentary means. The League would lay the groundwork for later nationalist movements and introduce many future leaders to Irish politics.
1916 - Final Evacuation of Gallipoli
The last Irish soldiers were evacuated from Gallipoli, ending a devastating campaign that claimed hundreds of Irish lives. The 10th (Irish) Division had suffered particularly heavy losses during the campaign. Their withdrawal marked the end of one of the most costly military endeavors for Irish troops during World War I.
1922 - First Irish Provisional Government
The first Provisional Government of the Irish Free State was established, with Michael Collins as Chairman. This interim administration would govern until the formal establishment of the Irish Free State in December. The government faced immediate challenges in establishing new state institutions while dealing with growing opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
1965 - Seán Lemass Meets Terence O'Neill
Taoiseach Seán Lemass made a historic visit to Stormont for talks with Northern Ireland Prime Minister Terence O'Neill. This groundbreaking meeting marked the first formal contact between the heads of government of both jurisdictions since partition. The meeting symbolized a new era of potential cooperation between North and South.
