1798 - Battle of Stooks Mountain

A significant clash between United Irishmen forces and Crown troops took place at Stooks Mountain, County Wexford. The rebel forces, though initially successful in their guerrilla tactics, were eventually overwhelmed by the better-equipped British forces. This battle marked one of the final major engagements of the 1798 rebellion in Wexford, highlighting the gradual defeat of the United Irish forces in the southeast.

1877 - First All-Ireland Athletics Championships

The inaugural All-Ireland Athletics Championships were held in Dublin, marking a significant milestone in Irish sporting history. The event, organized by the newly formed Irish Champion Athletic Club, brought together athletes from across the island to compete in various track and field events. This championship would later evolve into a cornerstone of Irish athletics.

1920 - Belfast Shipyard Expulsions

Large-scale expulsions of Catholic workers began at Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard. Protestant workers, many returning from World War I service, forced out Catholic colleagues and socialist Protestant workers. The expulsions marked a dark period in Belfast's industrial history, affecting over 7,500 workers and their families, and heightening sectarian tensions in the city.

1957 - Border Campaign Intensifies

The IRA's Border Campaign saw a significant escalation with coordinated attacks on Royal Ulster Constabulary barracks along the border. The operations, primarily focused in counties Fermanagh and Tyrone, marked an intensification of the republican military campaign. Despite initial success, these actions led to increased security measures and cross-border cooperation between Irish and Northern Irish authorities.
